Gyan PrakashPSU Friends of History Lecture: "The Superhero on Mumbai Streets"

Gyan Prakash, Dayton-Stockton Professor of History, Princeton University

Date: Thursday, May 5, 2011
Time: 7 PM
Place: Lincoln Hall 75, Portland State University, 1620 SW Park Ave., Portland, OR

Based on a chapter from his new book, Mumbai Fables: A History of an Enchanted City (Princeton University Press, 2010), Gyan Prakash's talk concerns the crisis of the liberal-democratic state in the 1990s and the appearance of a superhero in a popular comic-book series. In particular, Prakash will examine locally produced comic books as a way of understanding perceptions of modernization and corruption in that city.

The talk is sponsored by PSU's Friends of History and the Indian Student Assocation.
