The transition from socialism has been a tremendous success for China's national economy  and for many of its citizens. The consequent growth and restructuring of the cities has raised challenges of equal magnitude, especially in terms of the urban-rural gap and the marginalization of rural-urban migrants.  This presentation will focus especially on income inequality , access to education, and the uneven distribution of benefits from creation of the housing market as areas where the current direction of change is deepening the divide between winners and losers from market reform.
