When: Friday, November 2nd, 4:00pm
Where: Smith Student Union, RM 296

Pervasive human-caused changes to Earth’s ecological systems are resulting in the emergence of a new ecological world order characterized by novel ecosystems which combine biotic and abiotic properties unlike anything else in recent ecological history. Although ecosystem novelty itself is not new, human responsibility for novel ecosystems may be a distinctive feature of the emerging Anthropocene epoch. In this talk, I explore questions about moral responsibility for novel ecosystems and present a conceptual taxonomy of ecosystem novelty that corresponds to different forms of human influence. I argue that moral responsibility for novel ecosystems has implications for resource management policy, including practices of biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration, and for the development of an interventionist ecology. The talk also presents a model for thinking more broadly about environmental responsibility into the twenty-first century.
