The Portland Center for Public Humanities cordially invites you to the Faculty Lunch and Lecture Series.

In January, we will welcome Alex Sager. He will be presenting

Duties to Past Generations

Friday, January 14, 2011, 12-1:30pm
Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 236

Environmental ethicists and other philosophers have written a great deal about the questions and paradoxes involved in attributing duties to future generations. Sager suggests that we also owe duties to our ancestors, including certain obligations to preserve and protect the natural environment. Few recent value theorists have dwelt on past generations and Sager argues that this may well be an unfortunate idiosyncrasy of our culture and contemporary philosophy, contradicting basic moral tenants held in many cultures and time periods.

This event is part of the Faculty Lunch and Lecture Series sponsored by the Portland Center for Public Humanities.
