Breaking Barriers: Diversifying Access and Careers in the Law
Wednesday, March 5, 2008 - 3:30pm
Student Legal and Mediation Services (SLMS) at Portland State University and the Pre-Law Society, in partnership with the Career Center and the Multnomah Bar Association, will host a panel of judges and attorneys to discuss their varied legal career paths and the barriers faced by people of color in the profession of law.

This event will provide students who are interested in legal careers with an opportunity to hear how legal professionals chose law as a career. The panelists will discuss what hurdles they faced and how they overcame those hurdles. The panelists are Judge Adrienne Nelson who is Multnomah County's first female African-American judge, Nathan Vasquez who works at the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office, Ken Mitchell-Phillips who practices corporate and real estate law at the law firm of Davis Wright Tremaine, and Elisa Dozono who practices business litigation and government relations at the law firm of Miller Nash. Eric Dahlin, a partner at Davis Wright Tremaine who practices commercial litigation and who is a member of the Multnomah Bar Association Professionalism Committee and the Equality Committee, will moderate the event.

About SLMS:

SLMS provides confidential and professional assistance to students on a wide range of legal issues. Funded by student fees, these services are available to PSU students who are currently enrolled for 4 or more undergraduate credits or 3 or more graduate credits at PSU. In addition to providing legal advice and mediating disputes for students, it is SLMS's objective to provide legal education of preventive nature. SLMS offers students a large supply of free literature on various legal issues. SLMS also presents workshops on legal issues for student groups or PSU classes.

This event is made possible through the PSU Student Legal and Mediation Services and the Pre-Law Society and the generous support of the Career Center and Multnomah Bar Association.
