Ethnoarchaeology of Megalithic Tomb Buildings in West Sumba, Indonesia

The construction of large stone tombs persists in West Sumba, Indonesia into the present time. This practice can entail large expenditures and is highly tied to the traditional social structure of West Sumba. In addition, the continued use of traditional methods in the quarrying, transporting and erecting of megaliths makes this case unique from an ethnoarchaeological perspective. In this presentation, I provide an overview of the methods and costs associated with erecting megalithic tombs in West Sumba and discuss the continued social relevance of these large stone monuments.
