19th Annual Young Historians Conference
Sunday, April 5, 2009 - 8:00am to Sunday, April 5, 2009 - 2:15pm
The PSU History Department and the PSU Challenge High School Program are hosting the 19th Annual Young Historians Conference at PSU April 15.

This Conference is for and about high school students -- and, it is the best example of an "authentic" experience for young students of history.
Targeted to seniors in high level history or English classes who are writing or have written research papers, students present their papers
to an audience of fellow students. Professional historians act as commentators to the papers, and the audience can ask questions and probe
the conclusions of the presenters. Registration is required for both student presenters and audience participants and costs $15.00 (covers
conference costs, including breakfast and box lunch). Deadline for paper proposals is Feb. 17. For proposal forms, contact the Challenge Office at 503.725.5255

The day begins between 8:00 - 9:00 in the PSU Vanport Room (Smith Center), with juice, coffee and donuts. At 9:00 the first session opens
with three concurrent break-out groups, organized by topic (determined once we have the paper proposals). In each break-out group, students (three on average) present their papers; historians comment; and then the floor is opened for questions.
A second concurrent session begins at 10:30; box lunches and typically lively discussion follow in the Ballroom, with a third and final
concurrent session at 1:00. The conference ends at 2:15.

If students do not have research papers, we encourage instructors to bring your classes anyway.
