London! From Big Ben and The Beatles to Parliament and the BBC, this historic city is not just a global leader in culture, politics, and entertainment, it is arguably the media capital of the world. Where better to spend part of a summer studying Media Literacy with a veteran journalist as your professor?

In this fast-paced course, we will use London as our classroom as we focus on building critical skills for evaluating and contrasting mass media in the US and the UK. We will look at symptoms of the disconnect between media producers and consumers; seek to understand the challenges facing both older and new media organizations; and develop ways we can become more thoughtful, better-educated consumers of mass media. This two-week course will include field trips to news organizations, advertising, and PR agencies; a tour of Fleet Street, where British journalism was born; a chance to meet with local journalism students; guest speakers, small-group discussions and a rich mixture of readings, videos, and lectures.
