Magnetism and Spontaneous Orbital Currents from Interactions

In this talk I will review how interactions between electrons in a material may produce magnetic order in that electrostatics and the Pauli exclusion principle conspire to produce effective interactions between the particles’ spins.  I will show how the same line of reasoning can be used to investigate the possibility of more exotic phases of matter which are characterized by spontaneous, unit-cell-sized current loops. The potential relevance of the latter to high-TC superconductivity will be discussed.
