Meet Professor Melissa Haeffner

As a social scientist with a background in human-environment interactions, I am broadly interested in 1) using mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) to better understand water management responses to social and hydrological changes and 2) applying sociological knowledge to help inform urban water management decisions, particularly with regard to water justice, disaster resilience, and urban water infrastructure.

In my research, I focus on multi-scalar (household-city-state-global) influences of water management decision-making under baseline and extreme weather (e.g., flooding, drought) conditions. I have partnered with municipal actors in the United States, Mexico, and Ghana, and am interested in cross-cultural, comparative environments. I use hydrosocial and socio-hydrology approaches towards interdisciplinary, collaborate work.
