What: Portland State's Department of Art presents its first annual online auction, featuring contemporary paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculptures donated by 100 artists from across the nation, each with some connection to Portland State.

Cotton, wool, wire, buckwheat hulls, upholstery, macramé thread (18 x 24 in.)

The auction departs from the conventional bidding-war format to instead offer certificates for purchase, ranging in prices from $100 to $2500. Certificates entitle holders to select among all the artworks available, with those holding the costliest certificates choosing first. For a complete inventory of artworks, browse the auction website at

A big-screen introduction to the online auction site will be featured at the scholarship award celebration on June 12, along with a silent auction of artworks, oddities and engaging functional objects donated by friends of the art department. Among this year's contributors to the silent auction are Augen, Butters, Igloo and Mark Woolley Galleries and the New American Art Union. Proceeds from both auctions benefit art students at Portland State University. For more information on the award celebration and silent auction, visit

When: Auction opens internationally on June 6 and continues until all 100 certificates are sold.
