The English Department and PSU's Book Publishing Program announced the creation of a new award for graduate students in the publishing program at PSU.

The newly established Dennis Stovall First Edition Award, made possible thanks to a generous anonymous donor, will be awarded annually at the English Department's Nina Mae Kellogg Awards Ceremony to the student who best exemplifies the program’s mission.

Founded in 2001 by award-winning publishing professional Dennis Stovall, the Master’s program in Publishing seeks to provide students real-world publishing experience in an academic setting. Through classes on the theory and practice of publishing, as well as its student-staffed publishing house, Ooligan Press, the program offers students a hands-on approach to publishing education.

Per Henningsgaard, Director of Publishing, said of the Dennis Stovall First Edition Award, “We’re delighted that the Publishing program is finally going to be represented alongside PSU’s many other excellent English Department programs as part of the annual Nina Mae Kellogg Awards Ceremony.”

Ooligan Press is a general trade press at Portland State University. In addition to publishing books that honor cultural and natural diversity, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, Ooligan is dedicated to teaching the art and craft of publishing. Under the direction of professional faculty and staff, students combine theory with practice in order to publish profitable books in real markets.
