After 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, downtown's U.S. Postal Service office will no longer be University Station; it will be Waterfront Station, located with other federal offices in the First & Main building.

Some equipment has already been moved from 1505 S.W. Sixth Ave. to 101 S.W. Madison St., said Ron Anderson, spokesman with Portland Post Office. The remainder will be moved after closing time Saturday and installed in time for opening 8 a.m. Monday.

The post office has been working on leaving the location near Portland State University after more than two years of lease negotiations with the University Station building owner, a German trading company.

In June, six months before its lease expired, the Postal Service signed a lease for 9,364 square feet at First & Main, which already leases 265,000 square feet to the federal government.

Anderson says the smaller square-footage better matches the lower mail volume the post office now processes.

More than 900 post office box accounts will be moved less than half a mile to the Madison Street location, which is just more than half a mile from downtown's other post office, 204 S.W. Fifth Ave. That office is not open weekends.

People with University Station P.O. boxes will be able to exchange their old keys for new ones on Monday, Anderson said.

One big difference between University and Waterfront: The new station will not have a parking lot.

Otherwise, Anderson said, delivery service for zip codes 97204, 97205 and 97258 will be the same, as will services and hours at the new location, including an automated postal center in the building lobby available 24/7.
