"Why should I wait for it to get better?! And why should I believe you that it will?": Investigating the "It Gets Better" discourse.
Tuesday, January 15, 2013, 2:00-4:00pm
at the PSU Women's Resource Center

Responding to recent highly-publicized suicides of queer youth, sex-columnist Dan Savage and his partner created the first “It Gets Better” video in 2010. Since that first release on YouTube, the It Gets Better Project became a copyrighted entity and now boasts more than 25,000 videos from teachers, clergy, parents, actors, professional athletes, and even the President of the United States.

This talk will critically examine the discourse reinforced by and taken for granted in the It Gets Better project. We will view a sample of videos and talk together about the narratives they replicate and how they frame young people's lives, needs, and hope.
