Alumnus John George, IAL ’02, CAL ’13, has been selected as Oregon’s Middle School Principal of the Year by the Oregon Association of Secondary School Administrators (OASSA) and the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators (COSA). He is currently the principal of Fleming Middle School in the Three Rivers School District in Grants Pass, Oregon.

George joined Three Rivers School District in 1998, teaching science, math, and health. He was head football coach and athletic director.

A decade ago, Fleming Middle School was not doing well. It was identified by the Oregon Department of Education as “persistently dangerous,” and, according to George, had far too many expulsions for the school’s population. All that changed for the better when he took the principal’s job and turned it into the highest performing middle school in Josephine County.

“There’s a lot of great things that have gone on here over a period of time,” said Principal George. “For me it’s kind of a capstone to a lot of hard work by a lot of people.”

Mr. George is now a candidate for the National Middle School Principal of the Year Award from the National Association of Secondary School Principals and MetLife. He will be honored at the Annual COSA Conference in Seaside in June and at the NASSP State Principals of the Year Institute and Awards Gala in Washington, D.C.
