Ceremony will begin at 3:00pm. Graduates and faculty are required to arrive at the Convention Center at 2:00pm.
Please Note: The information on this web page is for the GSE Academic Hooding Ceremony ONLY. Students intending to graduate must still apply to graduate and request their degree through the Office of Graduate Studies. The University Commencement is a separate event on Sunday, June 18 at 10am, and requires a separate application.
This time-honored special ceremony is reserved for Graduate School of Education master’s and doctoral degree recipients who will be acknowledged for achieving their advanced degree and receive the traditional hood, that in academia signifies their school, degree, and field of study. This year’s event will be held in the Oregon Convention Center and includes a short program, followed by a presentation and hooding of the graduates. Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Eligibility: All masters and doctoral students graduating between fall 2016-fall 2017 are eligible to participate.
Steps to participate in the GSE Academic Hooding Ceremony
1. Register with the GSE – Complete the GSE Academic Hooding Registration Form online by June 1, 2017. Once registered, you will receive additional details nearer to the event date. (This is the ONLY form needed to register for the Academic Hooding Ceremony, reserve your guest tickets, and request accessibility accommodations.)
2. Order graduation regalia – Participating graduates and faculty are required to wear the full academic regalia: cap, gown, hood, and tassel. Graduates can purchase regalia and other graduation items through PSU’s Herff Jones Online Store. Regalia ordering will begin in March, 2017.
a. Hood color: light blue and dark green
b. Tassel color (Master’s): light blue
c. Tassel color (Doctoral): old gold
3. Pre-register for official photographs (Optional) – Professional photographers from GradImages will be taking photographs at the ceremony. You can preregister for your photographs online or at the ceremony if you are interested in purchasing professional photographs.
Guest tickets: Tickets to the GSE Academic Hooding Ceremony are free to graduates (graduates do not need a ticket). The maximum number of tickets per graduate is 6 and tickets are reserved for you when you register through the Academic Hooding Ceremony Registration Form. Tickets are available on a first come/first served basis. Additional tickets may become available in June; to request additional tickets, be sure to indicate your need on the Academic Hooding Ceremony Registration Form where indicated.
Arrival: Graduates should plan to arrive to the Oregon Convention Center on Sunday, June 18th by 2:00 pm with their regalia. Graduates will line up with faculty and should plan to be separated from family members during this time. Families can be seated in the main auditorium during this time.
Note: If you are participating in the 10am University Commencement Ceremony, you and your guests will have plenty of time to make your way from the Moda Center to the Convention Center. There are many restaurant options in the vicinity, including inside the Convention Center.
Ceremony: Only graduates are allowed on stage. Children and family members must remain in the guest seating areas. Guests are invited to approach the stage to take photographs while their graduate is crossing the stage, but we ask that they be respectful of others and move back to their seats after taking photos. We expect the ceremony to end at 5pm.
Accessibility: The Convention Center is a completely accessible venue. Please be sure to indicate any seating, mobility, or other accommodation needs when filling out the Academic Hooding Ceremony Registration form. You will be contacted by Emily McCaffrey to ensure all graduates and guests needs are met. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Parking & Transportation: The Oregon Convention Center is located in the heart of Portland’s NE district. Parking is available and public transportation via the MAX and bus system is also very accessible. Visit the Oregon Convention Center's Parking and Directions for more information.
Flowers: Giffords Flowers will be selling bouquets and leis before the start of the ceremony. Proceeds from the sales will benefit the GSE Emergency Fund for Students.
Restaurants: There are many restaurants in the vicinity and on the premises of the Oregon Convention Center. We recommend planning ahead for your family to celebrate by making reservations in advance.
