COE vision

In the next five years, we will be nationally recognized for working collaboratively with the surrounding communities, Tribal Nations, and our students to advance equity and excellence in education and counseling through our engaged research activities, and our community-centered and culturally responsive professional-preparation programs with innovative models for preparing diverse professionals who are critically engaged global citizens.


To prepare students to advance lifelong learning in diverse learning environments, including schools, postsecondary institutions, community organizations, and social service and health agencies.

Academic programs



Dr. Marvin Lynn is the dean of the College of Education at Portland State University. He is an internationally recognized expert on race and education and the lead editor of the Handbook of Critical Race Theory in Education published simultaneously in the U.S. and the U.K. with Routledge Press. He serves as an editorial board member of several journals, and has published more than two-dozen research articles and book chapters in reputable outlets. As dean of the COE, Dr. Lynn works closely with an outstanding and diverse faculty and staff to advance the national profile of high quality academic programs while further building and strengthening relationships with local schools.

Visit us

The COE is located on the second floor of the Fourth Avenue Building, on the corner of SW Harrison and SW 4th Avenue. We recommend you enter the building via the entrance on SW Harrison and take the central elevator or stairs to the 2nd floor where you will find the COE’s reception area adjacent to the elevator lobby.

Office hours are 8am-5pm Monday through Friday. The COE is closed all university holidays.

Please note that using the entrance on SW 4th Avenue will put you in the City of Portland Building. To reach the COE from this entrance, take a left at the City of Portland reception desk, and follow the hallway into the Portland State side of the building, then take the elevators or stairs to the 2nd floor where you will find the the COE’s reception area adjacent to the elevator lobby.

Transportation and parking

We recommend visitors utilize public transportation (i.e. bike, walk, bus, Max, Streetcar, etc.) as hourly parking on campus can be limited. However, if you choose to drive, we recommend parking in either PSU’s Fifth Avenue Lot or the U-Park Lot on SW Harrison for easiest access to the building. You may wish to review the list of all of PSU’s hourly parking lots and structures.
