Ceremony will begin at 3pm. Graduates are required to arrive at the Viking Pavilion at 2pm.

Please note: The information on this web page is for the Graduate School of Education’s Commencement ceremony. Students intending to graduate must still apply to graduate and request their degree through the Office of Graduate Studies.

This time-honored special ceremony is reserved for Graduate School of Education master’s and doctoral degree recipients who will be acknowledged for achieving their advanced degree and receive the traditional hood that in academia signifies their school, degree, and field of study. This year’s event will be held on campus at the newly renovated Viking Pavilion and includes a short program, followed by a presentation, degree awarding ceremony, and hooding of the graduates. Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Eligibility:

Master's students graduating between fall 2017 and fall 2018 are eligible to participate.

Doctoral students have a different eligibility window now that our ceremony is officially commencement. You must have graduated summer or fall 2017, winter 2018, or have applied for spring 2018 and met the following deadlines:

  • April 6, 2018: Completed application for graduation
  • May 11, 2018: Defended dissertation
  • May 25, 2018: Submitted dissertation to OGS for final approval

Steps to graduate

  1. Meet with your advisor to make sure you’re on track to complete all degree requirements. Students can run a DARS report at any time to check their progress towards graduation.
  2. Register and plan for final classes. PSU recommends running another DARS report after registering for your final term to confirm that all requirements are in progress.
  3. Attend to any outstanding grade issues, like incompletes.
  4. Submit your degree application. Be sure to submit your application by the correct deadline.
  5. Register for commencement by following the steps below.
  6. Order regalia through PSU’s Herff Jones online store, which opens in March 2018.

Steps to participate in the GSE Commencement Ceremony

  1. Registration is now closed. If you have questions about your registration, please email gseinfo@pdx.edu. Please note that if you have yet to reserve tickets for your guests, you need to do so by MAY 21, 2018.
  2. Confirm your 6 tickets through the Ticketing and Box office by completing the Box Office registration form.
  3. Order graduation regalia – Participating graduates and faculty are required to wear the full academic regalia: cap, gown, hood, and tassel.
    1. Hood color: light blue and dark green
    2. Tassel color (master’s): light blue
    3. Tassel color (doctoral): old gold
  4. Preregister for official photographs (Optional) – Professional photographers from GradImages will be taking photographs at the ceremony. You can preregister for your photographs online or at the ceremony if you are interested in purchasing professional photographs.

Important information

Guest tickets: The first 6 tickets to the GSE Commencement Ceremony are free for graduates’ family and friends (graduates do not need a ticket). The maximum number of tickets per graduate is 6 and tickets are reserved for you only after you register with the PSU Box Office. Tickets are available on a first come/first served basis. Additional tickets may become available after May 18th.

Arrival: Graduates should plan at arrive the Viking Pavilion on Friday, June 15, by 2pm with their regalia. By completing the registration form, you have completed an RSVP to the ceremony and we will send you more information about the day. Please check your email regularly. Graduates will line up with faculty in a separate location and should plan to be separated from family members during this time. Families can be seated in the main auditorium during this time. Note: Only graduates are allowed on stage. Children and family members must remain in the guest seating areas.

Accessibility: The Viking Pavilion is a completely accessible venue. Please be sure to indicate any seating, mobility, or other accommodation needs when filling out the Academic Hooding Ceremony Registration form. You will be contacted by Erica Soule to ensure all graduates and guests needs are met. Please email gseinfo@pdx.edu with any questions.

Childcare: Little Vikings is pleased to offer childcare during the GSE Commencement Ceremony at the Viking Pavilion. No registration required! There will be a room designated at the Pavilion so please follow the signs once you arrive. Parents are free to stay with their children or drop off. Plenty of games and crafts will be provided during your child’s stay. Childcare is available to all attendees, including families of the graduates, as well as faculty and staff. Little Vikings Childcare staff meet all Oregon Certified Childcare standards for training and background checks including First Aid and CPR. Parking & Transportation: The Viking Pavilion is located on the west side of the park blocks in the heart of PSU’s campus. Parking is available and public transportation via the MAX and bus system is also very accessible and recommended. Visit Transportation & Parking Services for more information.

Restaurants: There are many restaurants in the vicinity of PSU that are a great place for graduates and their families to celebrate at. Plan ahead for your family to celebrate by making reservations in advance.
