International Opportunities

Students aren't the only ones who would like to gain international experience, and there are several opportunities which are available to faculty and staff.  Bringing back your experiences to campus is yet another way to help reach our internationalization goals.  Opportunities include:

Fulbright for Faculty and Scholars

The Fulbright Scholar Program has many opportunities for faculty and scholars, both for US citizens and for visitors from other countries.  To learn more about this range of programs visit the Fulbright Scholar Program site.

For additional information on Fulbright opportunities, please contact Debra Clemans, Office of International Affairs, clemansd@pdx.edu.

PSU International Faculty-Led Programs

The Education Abroad office has dedicated staff to supporting Portland State University faculty in leading international programs abroad. Such programs are called International Faculty-Led Programs (IFLPs).

If you are a faculty member or department head interested in proposing a program, please review our online resources and contact our staff with any questions you may have.

For more information on international faculty-led programs, please contact Faculty-Led Program Coordinator Hannah Fischer (hfis2@pdx.edu).

Teach Abroad on Existing Programs

Semester at Sea

The Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) is a private, nonprofit, educational corporation that administers the Semester at Sea (SAS) global study abroad program. With international headquarters located in Fort Collins, Colorado, ISE hires the faculty, staff, and professionals who travel aboard SAS ships each academic term.

USAC

Professors from USAC Affiliate Universities have the unique opportunity to help internationalize their
home universities and support the USAC mission by teaching abroad on summer, or semester Specialty
Programs. USAC provides dedicated support for PSU faculty who will assist with the application process and all pre‐departure advising. Once on‐site, Visiting Professors (VPs) become part of the USAC office abroad.

Teaching abroad with USAC is a bit different from organizing a faculty‐led program abroad.  VPs are a part of the USAC community abroad, with access to resources and support from on‐site staff. VPs do not plan the overall logistics of the program, including arranging housing accommodations, the on‐site orientation, field trips, and handling any emergency situation that may arise. In addition, VPs have the advantage of drawing students from across the US, internationally, and in some cases even locally, for their courses through USAC’s general marketing efforts.

For additional information on the teaching opportunities above, please contact Faculty-Led Program Coordinator Hannah Fischer (hfis2@pdx.edu).
