CEE's ASCE Student Chapter Places 14th in National Steel Bridge Competition

PSU's ASCE Steel Bridge returned from the national competition, where they placed in the top 5% of the 240 teams participating this year. At nationals, they took 14th among 42 teams from four different countries that made the national competition. Steel Bridge is an annual competition for the American Society of Civil Engineers for which students are tasked with designing and fabricating a steel bridge on a 1:20 scale. The PSU team placed first in the Pacific Northwest Regional Conference to earn a trip to nationals and improved their performance by 30 percent between the Regionals and the Nationals by decreasing the assembly time and avoiding some of the penalties.

The team, led by faculty advisor Evan Kristof and Team Captain Polina Polikakhina, included Gladys Asemsro, Sarah Elder, Gabryel Galvez, Megan Hettema, Rebecca Jabar, Evgeny Kozyaev, Kevin McElroy, Cody Nickels, Zachary Reed, Bradley Sharpshair, John Siler, Ana Tijerina, and Mario Yescas

The mission of the ASCE/AISC Student Steel Bridge Competition (SSBC) is to supplement the education of civil engineering students with a comprehensive, student-driven project experience from conception and design through fabrication, erection, and testing, culminating in a steel structure that meets client specifications and optimizes performance and economy. The SSBC increases awareness of real-world engineering issues such as spatial constraints, material properties, strength, serviceability, fabrication and erection processes, safety, esthetics, and cost. Success in inter-collegiate competition requires effective teamwork and project management. Future engineers are stimulated to innovate, practice professionalism, and use structural steel efficiently.

The final design of the PSU bridge includes:

·  Spans 17 feet

·  Weighs 180 pounds

·  Deflects 0.3 - 0.4 inches at midspan under 2500lb load (depends on a load case).

·  Consists of 35 members, 27 bolts and four types of custom designed connections.

·  Takes three people 6-8 minutes to assemble over an imaginary river (depends on a day!).
