ECE's Newest Faculty Members

John LiporJohn Lipor

John Lipor earned his BSEE from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, MSEE from the King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST), and PhD from the University of Michigan. John is an awardee of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and has worked, studied, or volunteered as an engineer in six countries spanning three continents. His past research experiences include biomedical signal processing, array processing, and healthcare technologies for the developing world.

John's current research interests focus on the design and analysis of machine learning and signal processing algorithms, with an emphasis on developing techniques to advance environmental sensing and monitoring. One such example is the design of methods for adaptively collecting highly-informative measurements of environmental phenomena using autonomous vehicles such as unmanned aerial systems (drones). Another area of interest involves the use of models that leverage intrinsic low-dimensional geometric structure in data to perform inference tasks such as tracking objects in video. His research relies heavily on tools from robust and high-dimensional statistics, as well as sequential decision making and random processes.

Dr. Lipor joined the ECE department in Winter 2018

Hong LeiHong Lei

Dr. Hong Lei is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Portland State University. His current research interests and efforts span the areas of smart materials, sensors and actuators, modeling, and microfabrication. He is particularly interested in developing biologically inspired flow sensing technologies with a special focus on applications of underwater robot and environmental monitoring. Prior to joining PSU, he worked at SEL Engineering Services as an Automation Engineer from 2016 to 2018. From 2015 to 2016, he was a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan State University.

Dr. Lei will be joining the ECE department in Fall 2018
