DOSL Mission & Values Statement


The Mission of the Office of the Dean of Student Life is to foster and celebrate student engagement, learning and success by

  • helping students navigate Portland State University;
  • cultivating student responsibility and leadership;
  • promoting a diverse and respectful learning community;
  • providing leadership for specific programs and services; and
  • advocating on behalf of all students



The values stated below reflect the collective manner in which staffs aspire to execute responsibilities on a daily basis. The values provide guidance with regard to the practices that will assist staff and departments in moving toward individual and collective visions. The values were developed over the course of 2004-06 with a department-wide discussion in September of 2004 and subsequent discussions among respective units and the DOSL leadership group.

We place a premium on the evolution of individuals' capacity to engage effectively in community leadership.
