Portland, OR – Portland State University is joining forces with various Portland area businesses and enthuasists of the location-based mobile phone application Foursquare to celebrate Foursquare Day on Monday, April 16. A grass roots event started by Foursquare enthusiasts in Tampa, Florida in 2010, Foursquare Day is an annual event celebrated by thousands of communities around the world. Foursquare Day in Portland will bring various local businesses together to offer specials, discounts, and giveaways for customers who visit their locations and check in using the mobile phone application. The day will culimate in a special, free event at the Portland food cart, Whiffies Fried Pies, at 6 p.m. where Foursquare enthuasiasts can meet up over food and refreshments.

Portland State University is participating in Foursquare Day through a unique, all-day celebration called "PSU Foursquare Trail." The trail will have students checking in at various points around the campus to unlock deals and get free PSU swag. Participating businesses include Ben & Jerry's, 7-11, Seattle's Best Coffee, PSU Bookstore, Pizza Schmizza, and Greenline Market. PSU's own Academic Student and Recreation Center, Smith Memorial Student Union (Spirit Store), and Viking Information Center will also be participating and offering students check-in specials. A complete list of specials and rewards can be found here.

In recognition of Foursquare's benefit to local businesses, the city of Portland made it official by mayoral proclamation that April 16 is Portland Foursquare Day. "Foursquare is all about location and therefore helps spotlight local community," said Christian Aniciete, PSU's Social Media Specialist. "When you check in at a business, your friends see that you are a patron there. As a result, this social media app provides digital word-of-mouth that helps generate awareness and new business."

Portland State has been an ardent supporter of social media's power to reach out to students and build community on campus digitally and in person. PSU established its official Foursquare presence in 2011 and it has grown a following of over 300 students and Foursquare enthusiasts. PSU's Foursquare has added value to its campus tours as well as events like commencement and new student orientation activtiies. PSU's partnership with the city of Portland on Foursquare Day hopes to continue to celebrate the various businesses around campus and activate their growth.
