SSS Peer Outreach Mentors (POMs)

2018-2019 SSS Peer Outreach Mentors (POMs)

Hello, my name is Deza'Rae Collins and I am a senior undergraduate honors student, majoring in psychology and social sciences while minoring in biology. I have been a TRIO student since I attended Chemeketa Community College and Western Oregon University prior to transferring to PSU. My past experience includes participating in the Ronald E. McNair scholars program, serving as a TRIO SSS Program Assistant at CCC, and I am currently a Student Health Advocate for the Oregon School Based Health Alliance and a BUILD EXITO research assistant at OHSU in the Behavioral Neuroscience department. If you have any questions about research, studying abroad, how to get involved in your community, or advice on being successful at the university level and beyond, feel free to contact me at dezarae2@pdx.edu

Hi, my name is Katrina Dejeu, and I am a senior here at PSU. I am majoring in Health Studies: Health Sciences with Pre-Medicine, and my career goal is to become an Emergency Room Physician. I became a member of SSS when I was a freshman in 2015, and it has since helped me tremendously with navigating college life such as applying for financial aid, choosing/registering for classes, and developing employable skills. I decided to return as a Peer Outreach Mentor due to my great experience last year, and I look forward to organizing academic and fun social events as well as meeting you all and answering any inquiries you may have about the SSS program, classes, job opportunities, gaining experience in a medical setting, and more. Please contact me at kkd@pdx.edu if you have any questions.

Hello, my name is Patty Finch, and I am a transfer student from Portland Community College where I was also apart of the TRIO SSS program since 2014. I am currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Community Development with a minor in Gender, Sexuality and Queer Studies. In addition to working as a Peer Outreach Mentor for SSS, I also work in the Learning Center where students come for tutoring and academic coaching as their Lead Office Assistant. Pursuing a higher education has always been a dream of mine that I never thought I would be able to obtain due to my fear of failure. The SSS program has been a vital piece to my survival of college life, and I honestly do not think I would have made it this far without their support. I always have to remind myself that everything I ever wanted is on the other side of fear.

Hey, my name is Omar Ruiz. I am majoring in Social Work with a certificate in Chicano/Latino studies. This is my senior year at Portland State University and I feel honored to have been chosen to serve as a SSS Peer Outreach Mentor and will do my best to fill this role. I, like many other students at PSU, am a first-generation college student and the first in my family to be graduating from a university. By obtaining my bachelor’s degree, I will have completed one of my lifelong goals that I remember having as a child. This will be my third year in the SSS program which has helped me stay on top of my studies and provided me with multiple resources that have helped me excel as a student. The SSS staff have been very supportive, and I especially appreciate their primary goal to help students succeed. I look forward to meeting the new and continuing SSS participants and wish you all the best. If you have any questions for me feel free to contact me at omruiz@pdx.edu
