Adaptive Technology for Note Taking

Note taking technology is used as an accessible alternative to pen and paper. You can use this kind of technology to create audio recordings, take digital notes, and sync both recordings and notes between your devices.

  • Livescribe Echo Smartpen
    • The Livescribe Echo Smartpen syncs an audio recording of a lecture with handwritten notes when written on smart paper. After recording, you can review their notes and tap on your handwriting to play the audio recording of the lecture.
    • Cost: Free for checkout to eligible, degree-seeking DRC students. For personal devices and accessories, please refer to the Livescribe Store website for pricing.
    • Compatibility: Mac, Windows
    • Availability: A limited number of smartpens are available to eligible students for checkout through the DRC. You can also purchase Livescribe smartpens, paper, and accessories on the Livescribe Online Store.

  • Sonocent Audio Notetaker
    • Sonocent Audio Notetaker is an audio-recording and note-taking software that enables you to sync lecture slides to an audio recording, while also having the option to take typed notes.
    • Cost: Free for checkout to eligible, degree-seeking DRC students. For personal copies, please refer to the Sonocent website for pricing.
    • Compatibility: Windows, Mac, Android, iOS
    • Availability: A limited number of licenses are available to eligible students for checkout through the DRC. You can also purchase and download Sonocent Audio Notetaker via the Sonocent website.

  • AudioNote 2
    • AudioNote 2 is a digital notepad app that uses audio recording. It links digital notes to the recordings so you can review your notes with the added support of playing back what was being recorded at that point in time.
    • Cost: Please refer to the Luminant Software AudioNote web page for pricing.
    • Compatibility: Windows, Mac, Android, iOS
    • Availability: You can purchase and download AudioNote 2 on any personal Android, iOS, Macintosh OS, or Windows device via the Microsoft Store, Mac store, Google Play store, or App Store.

  • Citation Machine
    • Citation Machine is a website that helps you create citations for sources and allows you to add it directly to your papers and assignments.
    • Cost: Free
    • Compatibility: Web browser-based
    • Availability: You can use Citation Machine online via the Citation Machine website.
    • Support: Citation support and generation is available on the Citation Machine website for multiple styles including APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.
  • Mic Note
    • Mic Note is a digital notepad software that uses audio recording and has transcription capabilities. It links typed notes to the recordings so you can review your notes with the added support of playing back what was being recorded at that point in time.

    • Notability is a digital notepad app that uses audio recording. You can use this app to integrate handwriting, typing, drawings, audio, and pictures, as well as annotate documents.

    • Kami is an annotation tool that you can use to write on, draw on, type on, and highlight digital documents. You can also convert image PDFs into accessible PDFs with its free OCR (optical character recognition) tool.
