Portland State's Center for Entrepreneurship and Portland Garment Factory are the latest local companies to make critical personal protective equipment for hospitals.

The Center for Entrepreneurship will deliver 1,000 face shields to Legacy Health today. Portland Garment Factory on Friday delivered the first of 3,500 masks.

"We use products like facial shields and masks to keep our staff and patients safe, and during this pandemic, we need to replenish our supplies quickly, so having local options is a great help to us," said Ginger Henry, vice president of supply chain, in a news release.

Health care workers and state officials have said there is a critical shortage of protective equipment in the escalating battle against coronavirus, but manufacturers have struggled to find the material needed to make protective equipment.

Last week, dental equipment maker A-dec said it plans to make 9,500 pieces of protective equipment a week for Legacy for the next 13 weeks.

Oregon also has received some protective equipment from the national stockpile. 3-D printing enthusiasts also are making PPE.

The Portland State donation was made possible by the help of engineering students.

“Given my previous working relationship with Legacy as a medical interpreter, I reached out to some nurse friends, showed them the prototype, and the Legacy supply chain leaders approved,” said Juan Barraza, director of student innovation for the Center for Entrepreneurship at Portland State. "We're working around the clock and using 136 3-D printers spread out across the metro area. It is a logistics miracle given that all of this came together in less than a week."
