Laurels Graduate Award

Laurels Graduate Awards are available to admitted graduate degree students at Portland State University and to students entering a Portland State University graduate degree program in Fall term 2015. Approximately 35 full- and part-time students were recipients of 2015-16 awards; the number of awards will vary from year to year due to state-wide budget appropriations. The Laurels Graduate Award is $5,000 per year for master's students or $7,500 per year for doctoral students, distributed in equal parts over Fall, Winter, and Spring terms.

Western Regional Graduate Program

The Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP) allows out of state students from AK, AZ, CA, CO, HA, ID, MT, NV, NM, ND, SD, UT, WA, WY, and the Northern Mariana Islands to enroll in some of our graduate programs and pay resident tuition rates. Currently, the Master of Public Administration, Master of Public Administration: Health Administration, Master of Urban Studies, Master of Urban and Regional Planning, PhD in Urban Studies, and PhD in Public Affairs and Policy are all eligible. Applications for the WRGP should be submitted as soon as you receive an offer of admission, if not earlier.

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate Assistantships provide partial remission of the instructional fee portion of tuition and a salary on a regular periodic basis as compensation for the service provided each term of the appointment. There are three types of assistantships: teaching, research, and administrative. You must be a full-time graduate student, regularly admitted to a graduate degree program, and in good academic standing to begin an assistantship. Contact the Office of Graduate Studies for full details.

Peer Mentorship Program

The University Studies Peer Mentorship Program pairs exceptional graduate students with PSU faculty to deliver year-long freshman level (Freshman Inquiry) and term-long sophomore level (Sophomore Inquiry) courses. Graduate Peer Mentors are hired as Graduate Teaching Assistants and receive graduate tuition up to 9 credits (excluding fees) and a monthly stipend. All GTAs are assessed tuition at the in-state rate. Post-baccalaureat and certificate-only students are not eligible for peer mentorship; mentors must be enrolled in a degree-granting program at PSU.

Dean's Awards

Each year departments may choose to award funding to exceptional students. These awards are made at the discretion of the departments and have no application process.
