This animation shows the fluctuation of bicycle thefts in Portland between 1995 and 2013. Unlike most of the crimes detailed in these analyses, bicycle thefts increase 83% during the time span analyzed. While the number of incidents appears relatively stable and even decreased slightly during the early years, a surge around 2010 resulted in in well-above-average concentrations of incidents across a large portion of the city. Initial years show incidents grouped in downtown and Southeast Portland; still, average to above-average concentrations of theft were spread throughout the city. The surge in the number of thefts occurring after 2010 could possibly be attributed to the increase in popularity of cycling as a means of transportation, resulting in more bikes throughout the city. However, thefts were not isolated along major roads or business districts; they were also widespread in residential areas.
