Gun Crimes

Definition: A gun crime occurs when a firearm is present or used during the course of a crime. A firearm is defined as a weapon that shoots a projectile by ignition of gunpowder. This includes, but is not limited to, handguns, revolvers, shotguns, and rifles.

The data analyses in this section include gun crimes that happened in Portland, Oregon, and were reported to the Portland Police Bureau between 1995 and 2013. In total, there were 15,869 incidents involving firearms reported during this time. This includes 7,725 (48.7%) aggravated assaults; 486 (3%) attempted murders; and 7,658 (48.3%) robberies (bank, street, business, and residential). This analysis does not include all gun crimes however: Due to their sensitive nature, crimes such as sexual assaults, homicides and a few others have been excluded.
