  • December 11, 2013: Full day pre-trip session at PSU.
  • January 15, 2014: Second pre-trip session (approximately 2 hours in the afternoon) at PSU.
  • January 26 – January 31: Visit to Washington DC; optional White House tour on February 1.
    • Mandatory dinner sessions: Sunday, January 26; Tuesday, January 28; Thursday, January 30
  • February 25, 2014: Morning post-trip session at PSU.

Because events move so quickly in Washington, DC, we need to be flexible to accommodate our speakers' schedules. The 2014 National Policy Process trip itinerary will be handed out on the bus tour on Sunday, January 26. In the meantime, please look at last year's agenda to get a sense of the flow of the program. Exact meeting times and individual speakers may change, but we will visit the same or similar agencies and offices during the trip, and the focus of each day will remain more or less the same.

Pre- and Post-Trip Sessions

The seminar includes a full day pre-trip session on December 11 (8 am-5 pm at PSU - University Place Astoria Room) plus two additional hours on January 15 (Smith Memorial Student Union Room 327/328; exact time to be determined). The post-trip session is scheduled for the morning of February 25 (University Place, Coos Bay Room).

Participation in the pre- and post-trip sessions is expected and will greatly enhance your ability to understand, integrate, and make use of what would otherwise appear to be a bewildering level of information we will receive while in Washington. For Trip 1 participants, the January session is highly recommended but is optional for those who would need to travel long distances.

In Washington, DC

Our sessions in Washington DC begin with a bus tour of the city early Sunday morning

January 26 and conclude late Friday afternoon January 31. In addition, there will be an optional and informal dinner and tour of the Adams-Morgan neighborhood Saturday evening January 25. We have also submitted a request for an optional tour of the White House on Saturday morning, February 1; we will not know if this request has been granted until later in the year. We will plan a back up visit to another relevant site if our request is not granted. We will have a final schedule upon your arrival in Washington, D.C.

Regarding the Sunday bus tour: we will meet in the Hotel Lobby at 7:45 am and board a motor coach for a 6-hour tour of Washington, D.C. You do not have to pay for this service; however a few dollars for a tip to the driver would be appreciated (we will pass a hat). We also plan to visit a unique soup kitchen and you may want to give them a small donation (not mandatory, but again, we'll pass a hat). The Sunday tour will end at 2:00 pm back at the hotel. You will be free from that time until approximately 6:00 pm when we will meet for dinner at the Hunan Dynasty. You will be given directions during the tour. This is a good time to sightsee or grocery shop. The Sunday evening speakers know that this will be an informal dress day so there will be no need to return to the hotel and change.

The official program ends at the end of the day on Friday, January 31. Friday will be used for participants to make small group and individual appointments with colleagues and counterparts in D.C. Therefore, it is important that you plan to remain in D.C. at least through the late Friday afternoon. A possible, optional White House tour is planned for the morning of Saturday, February 1. Due to White House scheduling, please note that this tour may not be confirmed until two weeks before. We will inform you as soon as the tour has been confirmed; however, you may want to plan for the possibility by arranging your hotel and flights to allow for this unique opportunity.
