Course Description

This course focuses on issues related to emergency/disaster management, disaster preparedness, and community redevelopment and resilience. For that purpose, the main part of this course will be a mandatory trip to visit the disaster-stricken areas in the Tohoku region, Japan where the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami happened in March 2011. 

Participants will learn:

  1. Gain in-depth knowledge from academic professionals at Kyorin University in a 2-day session;
  2. Interact with public officials, nonprofits, and community organizations of Kesennuma and Ishinomaki cities, and;
  3. Engage in dialogue with locals to capture the forgotten stories of struggle and hope in the aftermath of the crisis.

Pre-Trip Sessions: Saturday, April 28th and May 26th, 2018 

Trip to Japan: June 23nd-30th, 2018 / Must arrive in Sendai on the 23rd. 

Program Cost: Approximately $3,200 per person

  • Tuition & Program fees (PSU credit, accommodation in Tohoku, aravel insurance)

  • Economics Undergraduate and Graduate: 4 credits
  • Public Administration Undergraduate: 4 credits
  • Public Administration Graduate: 3 credits
