2019 Confucius Institute Chinese Skills & Talents Contests

An annual competition of Chinese language, arts, and talents at CIPSU, sponsored by the Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters in China.

Time: Saturday, April 6, 2019, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.

Location: Karl Miller Center, rooms 285 and 295
615 SW Harrison Street, Portland, OR 97201

Participants: Open to non-native Chinese speakers

1. Off-site:

  • Photography and short film 
  • Calligraphy with Writing Brush 
  • Calligraphy with Pen or Pencil 
  • Chinese Painting or Drawing 

Submission Deadline: Friday, March 29 by 5:00 p.m.

          Note: Photos and short films must be send to email: xmao@pdx.edu. For Calligraphy with Writing Brush,                       Calligraphy with Pen or Pencil, Chinese Painting or Drawing, please submit to KMC 660-T (615 SW                         Harrison St, Portland, OR 97201).
                   Everyone is welcome to attend the award ceremony to enjoy other participants’ performances.

 Please register HERE. You can choose either Mandarin Bee or Speech Talent contest.                       
      Registration Deadline: Friday, March 29 by 5:00 p.m.

  • Speech Contest : Self-selected theme, prepare the speech content in advance, and conduct a three-minute Chinese speech according to the drawing sequence. (Note: You can choose your own topic, including but not limited to:
    我的一家  (Wǒ de yì jiā)
    我的爱好  (Wǒ de àihào)
    我的老师  (Wǒ de lǎoshī)
    我的好朋友  (Wǒ de hǎo péngyǒu)
    我的家乡  (Wǒ de jiāxiāng)
    我的学校  (Wǒ de xuéxiào)
    我爱学中文  (Wǒ ài xué Zhōngwén)
    我最喜欢的一本书  (Wǒ zuì xǐhuan de yì běn shū)
    我最喜欢的一句话  (Wǒ zuì xǐhuan de yí jù huà)
    我最喜欢的中国节日  (Wǒ zuì xǐhuan de Zhōngguó jiérì)

       Talent Show 

All kinds of talents are welcome (singing, dancing, tongue twisters, drama, and more)
Both individuals and groups are welcome
Please bring your own instrument, music, or any other necessary materials

      Mandarin Bee
           The contestants stand in a row according to the order of the lottery, and answer the questions in turn.                 The examiner gives the English vocabulary/phrase/sentence, the player needs to speak the                                   corresponding Chinese vocabulary/phrase/sentence within ten seconds, the correct answer is passed,                 and the one who fails to answer or answer the wrong is eliminated. This cycle is repeated until the top three winners are decided.
           Questions for Mandarin Bee are from the question pool.
