Grad Prep Admission FAQs


 

1. Who must apply for admission to the CS Dept?

Anyone who wishes to take upper division CS courses including post-bac students.

2. When does admission to the CS Dept. take place?

Fall and winter quarters only each year. Plan accordingly so the last courses required for admission are completed by or in progress the term before admission. Fall admits will have applied during spring term and winter admits will have applied during fall term.

3. What are the deadlines?

Fall admission deadline --April 15th

Winter admission deadline -- October 15th

4. What are the course requirements for admission to the CS Department?

  • Formal admission to PSU.
  • Completion of all the lower division CS courses listed in our Grad Prep program 
  • An All-Attempts GPA of 3.0 or better in all required computer science courses
  • Completion of the Programming Proficiency Demo

5. Is there a GPA requirement for admission? 

Yes, we use an all-attempts GPA calculation for CS 162, 163, 202, 201, 250, 251.  This means we count every single grade you’ve earned for these courses.

6. Is the admission process selective?

No.  At this time, all students that meet the admission requirements are admitted to the CS program.

7. Can I have courses in progress while I submit my application?

Yes, courses required for admission may be in progress at the time of application.  If the in-progress coursework is not completed with the appropriate grade by the end of the term, CS admission may be revoked and the student may be dropped from all upper division CS courses

8. What if I am in my last course at a community college and the course is not on my PSU DARS?

Submit a current unofficial transcript from the college that shows the course in progress and your name and attach it to your application.  Once your grade is recorded for this class send an official transcript to PSU Admissions.

9. Where is the application?

10. What does conditional admittance mean?

Students that apply to the program with courses in progress and have met all the other requirements will be admitted to the CS program on the condition that they receive a passing score for required classes in progress.  Students will be allowed to register for upper division CS courses.  At the end of the admission term, grades for classes which were in progress will be checked and students that have not passed will have their admission revoked and administratively dropped from their upper division CS courses.

11. Can I take upper division CS courses before being admitted to the CS Dept.?

No.

12. Once I’m admitted to the CS Dept will my tuition increase?

Yes, the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science charges a differential tuition for admitted students to pay for use of College resources.  Tuition and fee charts are here.

13. What if I am denied admission?

Consult the CS adviser.  Depending on the reason for the denial you may request a review by the CS Appeals Committee.
