Mentor Training Workshop

Quality mentoring is an important contributor to the success of researchers across all disciplines and career stages. PSU is hosting a two-day workshop for faculty who are interested in improving the mentoring methods they use with students and postdocs while also learning to be a facilitator of mentor training. This training will empower facilitators to implement evidence-based mentorship training.

During this two-day “train-the-trainer” workshop, participants learn “Entering Mentoring,”
a mentor training curriculum. A full program overview is alailable here. Topics addressed will include: 

  • Aligning expectations
  • Addressing equity and inclusion
  • Articulating mentoring philosophies and plans
  • Assessing understanding
  • Cultivating ethical behavior
  • Enhancing work-life integration
  • Fostering independence
  • Maintaining effective communication
  • Promoting mentee research/scholarship self-efficacy
  • Promoting professional development

This two-day training is hosted by RGS, EXITO, and OHSU. Registration is limited to those who can attend the entire two-day training session. RGS will provide lunch. Space is limited to 18 PSU participants. Please contact Amy Spring (aspring@pdx.edu) to register for the event.

Lead Facilitator: Christine Pfund, PhD (University of Wisconsin – Madison)
 

Christine Pfund, PhD, is a researcher with the Wisconsin Center for Education Research and the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW). Dr. Pfund earned her Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For more than a decade, she has focused on developing, implementing, documenting, and studying research mentor training interventions across science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine. Dr. Pfund co-authored the original Entering Mentoring and Entering Research curricula and has co-authored a number of papers documenting the effectiveness of these approaches. Currently, she is co-leading two studies focused on the impact of training on both mentors and mentees and understanding specific factors in mentoring relationships that account for positive student outcomes. Dr. Pfund is the principal investigators of the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) Coordination Center, previously directing both NRMN’s Mentor Training and Administrative Cores. She is also director of the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experience in Research at UW-Madison (CIMER). As an NRMN Master Facilitator, Dr. Pfund facilitates mentor training, mentee training, culturally aware mentor training, and facilitator training workshops. She has also led dozens of presentations on the science of mentorship and associated work. Dr. Pfund is currently serving on a National Academies Consensus Study Committee focused on “The Science of Effective Mentoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine, and Mathematics.”

 

Facilitator: Anna B. O'Connell, Greaduate Education Consultant, O'Connell Consulting Services LLC
 

Trained as a biomedical research scientist, Anna’s career has been focused on biomedical graduate education. From 2006-2019 Anna served as Director of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Biological & Biomedical Sciences graduate program (BBSP). In this role Anna led graduate admissions, supervised a team of professional staff, directed the first-year training program, and oversaw the business operations of UNC’s Office of Graduate Education. She draws from her leadership and management experience in her current work.

Anna was especially passionate about improving the climate for trainees while at UNC. She advised graduate students and faculty mentors on challenging training issues, led mentor trainings for faculty, and advocated to improve graduate student mental health. Anna now works as a consultant leading workshops and trainings for students and faculty focusing on these same issues. She also works with departments to evaluate and improve their training climate. Anna has been trained as a Master Facilitator with the National Research Mentoring Network and leads mentor and mentee trainings using their curriculum.
