Helen Farrens Library Media Scholarships for Library Media Endorsement program applicants

Helen Farrens was passionate about education, teaching, and the school librarian. In her estate she left a gift to the Portland Association of School Librarians to be used for the education and benefit of Portland School Librarians. The Portland Association of School Librarians has directed this estate gift to the PSU College of Education to be used for library/media scholarships according to the wishes of the benefactor. The Association states that "as career school librarians, we believe that schools need the expertise of librarians who have been specifically prepared for that work." The scholarship committee gives preference to applicants with financial need, previous teaching experience, and those currently employed by Portland Public Schools.

The Helen Farrens Library Media Scholarship is awarded to students in Portland State University's College of Education Library Media Endorsement Program who are:

  • Current Portland Public School teachers obtaining a library media endorsement
  • Current Portland Public School library media aides completing their teaching license with a library media endorsement or adding the endorsement to their license
  • Students who intend to work in Portland Public Schools upon graduation
