Early Childhood Special Education Specialization

A specialization in Early Childhood Special Education gives you the knowledge to support and provide services to children with special needs and their families. The program has a strong focus on the developmental periods between birth and eight years old. The courses required for this specialization are arranged with your advisor and include offerings across Special Education and Early Intervention (birth-age five) and/or Early Childhood Special Education (focused on ages zero-five).

Courses may include the following:

  • SPED 580 Introduction to Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education (3 credits) (Summer)
  • SPED 518 Survey of Exception Learners (3 credits) (offered every term)
  • CI 510 Young Children, Families, Culture, and Language (3 credits) (Fall term)
  • CI 510 Inclusive Experience in Early Childhood Programs (3 credits) (TBA)

Specialized topic areas include: Asperger's Syndrome and High Functioning Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder certificate programs.
