Curriculum and Instruction Master's Degree Admissions


Admittance into the MA*/MS** in Curriculum and Instruction is dependent upon completion of the application materials and admittance processes as follows.

*MS (master of science) does not require foreign language competency.
**MA (master of arts) indicates competency in a foreign language. The Department of World Languages and Literature administers the required foreign language examination.

Admission criteria

To be considered for admissions in the MS/MA in Curriculum and Instruction, candidates must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with:

  • A cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 OR
  • A cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 (a minimum of 9 credits)

Application instructions

Applications are now open! By submitting a single application in our College Net application system you will be considered for admission by your program as well as at Portland State University. This web based application system will allow you to input your personal information, upload materials, and track your application status from any online location. Select the name of your program in your CollegeNet application: "Curriculum and Instruction, Masters." You will need to indicate whether you are applying for the online or on campus program.

Application requirements

The following components are part of your Graduate School of Education application packet:

  • Statement of purpose (500 words): Describe your career goals, professional experiences and/or accomplishments, and your reason for applying to the program.
  • Resume
  • Email addresses for 2 recommenders who can provide an honest appraisal of your interpersonal and professional qualities and ability to be successful in this field.
  • Official transcripts from all institutions previously attended are required as part of the official application. Transcripts should be sent to the Portland State University Graduate School of Education PO Box 751 Portland, OR 97207-0751. Electronic official transcripts should be emailed to
    • To complete your application to the Graduate School of Education (GSE), you are required to submit official transcripts from every institution of higher education that you have ever attended. This is true regardless of whether or not you earned a credential from that institution, or if those credits were transferred to another school. Please review the transcript requirements.
    • Transcripts are due by the application submission deadline. Applications without official transcripts submitted will be considered incomplete and may be disqualified from the review process or may not be reviewed in time for you to be admitted for your desired term.
    • PSU graduates will have any former transcripts on file automatically pulled and uploaded to their current GSE application. You do not need to re-submit these transcripts. 
    • PSU Graduates DO need to submit official transcripts if:
      • You attended another institution after your enrollment at PSU
      • You completed any additional coursework not reflected in your previously submitted transcripts

Application deadlines


The online program is a cohort model that starts every fall term where students proceed as a group through the core courses. This means that you will take the 30 credits of core courses (starting in fall term) as a group at a set pace over 2 years. The 15 credits of electives may be done before, during, or after the core courses but must be approved by the faculty advisor.


The on-campus program application is year-round for any term.

To validate your admission for EITHER program, you must take a course during the term in which you have requested to be admitted. Should you not take a course in that term, your application will be cancelled and you will need to reapply.
