Joan Shireman and Marjorie Terdal received Outstanding Retired Faculty Awards and Larry Sawyer was honored with a Special Recognition Award at the annual President's Luncheon on April 18. The awards, presented by the Retirement Association of Portland State (RAPS), acknowledge service to the community, the University, professional and career achievements, and service to the Retirement Association.

Marjorie Terdal, professor emerita of Applied Linguistics, was recognized for her post-retirement teaching, international service to underdeveloped communities, generous community volunteerism, and leadership in RAPS. A past president of RAPS, Terdal currently serves as membership chair.

Joan Shireman, professor emerita of Social Work, received her award in recognition of "continuing exceptional academic contributions to the profession of social work and to the University, professional service to many community organizations, and leadership in major roles with RAPS." Shireman served as RAPS president in 2011-12

A surprised Larry Sawyer, retired Audio-Visual staff member, received a Special Recognition Award for the many ways he has supported RAPS over the years, including audio recording program speakers, photographing people and events for the RAPS Sheet, and creating and helping manage the membership database. He was also recognized for influencing RAPS to join the Association of Retirement Organizations in Higher Education and teaming with Robert Vogelsang to create the RAPS student scholarship.
