Now Hiring: Director for Environmental Services

The Center for Urban Studies of the Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning invites applicants for a non tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Senior Research Associate to serve as Director of Community Environmental Services (CES).  CES is a self-support unit within the Center for Urban Studies that has, for twenty-five years, provided high quality applied research, technical assistance, and educational outreach services in the areas of solid waste minimization, recycling, and community sustainability program evaluation.

The CES research and service portfolio includes: waste diversion and sustainability practices at Portland Int'l Airport (PDX); evaluation of surplus public sector properties; recycling behavior in multifamily residences; outreach to diverse business owners on environmental compliance; food waste diversion practices; and technical assistance on difficult-to-recycle materials among local grocers. CES also provides PSU students the opportunity to develop leadership capacities and practical job skills as they engage with community sustainability projects.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in environmental science, sustainability, urban and regional planning or other appropriate disciplines at the time of application or be able to provide assurance of completion of a Ph.D. prior to appointment; OR a Master’s degree with four or more years of progressively responsible experience in research and/or policy evaluation that demonstrates the ability to design and implement studies.

Successful candidates will have a high level of skill, interest, and experience in applied scholarship, the maintenance of relationships with partners, and the dissemination of research to diverse academic, practitioner, policy-maker, and community audiences. Candidates should have an interest in supporting and participating in applied and practitioner-oriented research as well as traditional academic scholarship. We strongly encourage candidates to describe their experience and success with grant-writing and external research funding awards, successful response to RFPs from government agencies, and/or success with foundation award proposals.
