Meet Mona Tougas

Mona Tougas is an Access Counselor and Consultant in the Disability Resource Center. Mx. Tougas is motivated to contribute to disability justice and inclusive excellence in education. Before joining the DRC team at Portland State University, Mona worked in a similar role as an Access Advisor in the University of Oregon Accessible Education Center. Mx. Tougas earned their Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at University of Oregon and taught there for seven years. Mona’s work in disability service provision began in 2008 while working at Bronx Day Hab and serving as a hospice volunteer in Coney Island, NY. While living Eugene, Mx. Tougas organized and supported a volunteer student panel that shares personal experiences of disability identity, university access and barriers. Mona previously volunteered with the Legal Redress Committee of the Lane County NAACP. Mx. Tougas enjoys collaborating with students, faculty, staff, and community members to incorporate inclusive design and trauma-informed practice into university courses, centers, and systems. They also enjoy acting in plays, biking, listening to pop music (as well as queer, comedy, and racial justice podcasts), and hiking with their dogs.
