Portland State University (PSU) and Celilo Group Media’s Chinook Book have launched an exciting mobile app that is available for free to some 33,000 PSU students, faculty and staff. The first of its kind, the app includes money-saving coupons for sustainable products and services that students love as well as student resources for green campus living.

The release of the PSU Chinook Book app marks the beginning of a six-month pilot project to test the demand for a university-specific Chinook Book. The company has been using smart phone apps to supplement its traditional coupon book business since 2010.

“We’ve had great success with individuals using the Chinook Book app, and we are thrilled to launch the first extension of the Chinook Book mobile platform for a university community,” said Carrie Treadwell, market director of the Portland Chinook Book. “The Chinook Book mobile platform allows PSU to deliver exclusive content directly to the mobile devices of students, faculty and staff.”

Coupons include discounts at Portland businesses including Ben & Jerry’s, Bike Gallery, HOTLIPS Pizza and Whole Foods Market. The app also includes a robust resource section with links to organizations on- and off-campus. Other resources include bike maps, articles and videos about sustainability and links to websites that post green job opportunities.

The app was funded by PSU’s Institute for Sustainable Solutions (ISS) in partnership with Celilo Group Media.

“The Chinook Book app helps students connect with businesses and other resources in their community that support sustainability,” said Jennifer Allen, director of ISS. “Engaging with partners like Celilo Group to help enrich the student experience by connecting them to Portland’s deep sustainability resources is a key role for ISS and its Sustainability Leadership Center, which managed this project.”
