Last week Tung Nguyen was given the opportunity of a lifetime. A mechanical engineering student and one of 21 Intel Vietnam Scholars sponsored by Intel Corporation to study at the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science, Nguyen shared his lab research on zero gravity testing materials for NASA with the Consul General of Vietnam.

“It’s exciting to share the research I help conduct,” said Nguyen. “I spend most of my time working in the drop tower lab knowing that what I learn can enhance future work in Vietnam.”

Consul General Nguyen Ba Hung’s visit to PSU was part of a week-long workshop organized by the Oregon Guard’s State Partnership Program. The program seeks to strengthen training, education and trade relationships between Vietnam and Oregon.

In Vietnam there is a growing need to increase the capacity of its workforce across a number of disciplines including computer science, information technology and public administration. Vietnam also faces rapid urbanization.  “Oregon is a laboratory where sustainability policies have been tested, and Portland State University (PSU) is well-positioned to share emerging technology and expertise on topics like multi-modal transportation and waste management systems to help advance green growth initiatives,” explained Julia Babcock, co-facilitator of PSU’s Vietnam Forum.

The Vietnamese government has set a goal of assisting 10,000 Vietnamese nationals to receive doctorate degrees by 2020.  Enrollment of Vietnamese students in Oregon has been on the rise. PSU currently has 111 students, 63% of the total 177 enrolled in public universities in the state.

Dr. Dang Van Huan, who recently finished his Ph.D. in Public Affairs and Policy at PSU and plans to return to his position with the Ministry of Education and Training, facilitated much of the tour which included introductions to PSU’s educational exchange programs. The visit concluded with words of encouragement from President Wim Wiewel to the Consul General to support future education and research-based collaborations between PSU and Vietnam.
