Maja D'Aoust, "The Creative Fire"

Friday, April 18, 7:00 pm
at Xhurch, 4550 NE 20th Ave

The Portland Center for Public Humanities welcomes Los Angeles-based performer and scholar, Maja D’Aoust, for a lecture called “The Creative Fire”. Pairing with local experimental performance space and arts incubator, Xhurch (4550 NE 20th Street), PCPH presents this invigorating, unique speaker who often appears as “The White Witch of LA” on Friday, April 18, at 7 p.m. The presentation is the first of three in the center’s spring 2014 series of lectures on “visions” - examining creativity, spirituality, and art.

Drawing on transformational folklore and mythology that revolves around the essence of innovation, artistry and the cultivation of self, D’Aoust will lecture on the driving force of artistic inspiration and vision. Using motifs and themes that have currents in a myriad of traditions, D’Aoust will explore the Jewish legend of golems, interpret the story of Frankenstein and related tales of symbolic dismemberment, and elaborate upon myth as metaphor for the spirit of invention, creation and experimentation.

Maja D’Aoust specializes in alchemy and the esoteric sciences, an interest that spans her entire lifetime. After completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, she studied Oriental medicine and acupuncture and later earned her Master’s Degree in Transformational Psychology with a focus on shamanism, the I Ching and ancestors in her thesis work. D’Aoust writes articles on alchemy and magic and is the co-author of the book "The Secret Source" and co-hosts the radio show "Expanding Mind" with Erik Davis.

This event is free and open to the public.
