EERI Student Chapter Hosts Yumei Wang for a reprise of the ASCE Le Val Lund Lecture

Portland State University Student Chapter of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) hosted Yumei Wang for a reprise of the Le Val Lund Lecture titled "Disasters, Resilience, and the Next Generation" she first gave at USC in November 2018.  The event, held in EB102 on Friday, Feb 1 at 4 pm was "sold out" with nearly all of the 102 seats in the auditorium filled. Yumei Wang, P.E. is a resilience engineer at the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI)and  been honored by The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) with the 2018 Le Val Lund Award for Practicing Lifeline Risk Reduction for her outstanding contributions to the field of lifeline engineering and for promoting seismic lifeline resilience and fuel resilience in Oregon, including the development of a statewide resilience plan.

In the lecture, Yumei Wang presented a challenge to develop new and transformative approaches for improving society’s resilience to future natural disasters. The severity and consequences of disasters caused by natural hazards are greatly affected by the functionality of critical lifeline infrastructure — related to fuel, power, water, transportation, and communications — after the events. To reduce the frequency and impacts of future disasters such as a Cascadia earthquake and tsunami as a society, she called on engineers and planners to develop new coordinated approaches among lifeline infrastructure system owners for delivery of basic services to ensure community resilience.  

The lecture was followed by a panel discussion with Mike Harryman, State Resiliency Officer from Governor Brown's Office, Dr. Richard Corsi, PSU Dean of Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science, Dr. Stephen Percy, PSU Dean of College of Urban and Public Affairs. The panel addressed a number of questions from CEE Assistant Professor Arash Khosravifar. The panel's comments highlighted the need for both technical and social solutions.

It was a compelling and informative event regarding the state of seismic resilience in Oregon and important steps moving forward. The event highlighted the importance of Dean Corsi's new strategic vision for MCECS. One of the focused research investments and themes will be to "Transform the Resiliency of Physical and Cyber Systems" More details about the new vision can be found on the MCECS website.

FROM ASCE: Le Val Lund , Jr. PE, M.ASCE was an eminent professional engineer who committed his entire career to public service and became an internationally recognized expert on urban lifelines, how to protect these critical systems from earthquakes and other hazards, and implementing the practice of preparing urban systems and communities for disasters. The Le Val Lund Award for Practicing Lifeline Risk Reduction will advance the science and profession in engineering by acknowledging individuals who have made definitive contributions in the practice of reducing risks to lifeline systems and preparing communities for natural and technological hazards. The Le Val Lund Lecture on Lifeline Infrastructure and Community Resilience intends to (1) promote interaction between Engineering professionals, community leaders and organizations, educational and research institutions, and students and (2) improve lifeline infrastructure resilience to support resilient communities.
