Brayam Cruz

Hey! My name is Brayam and I’m a first-generation student studying Electrical Engineering at Portland State University. My focus is on power, hoping that in the future I’ll work with renewable energy sources such as wind, hydro-electric or solar power. I have a passion for the environment and want to do anything and all I can to help preserve it. I feel like I have so much to be proud of, but I would say what brings me pride and joy to this day is being the first in my family to attend college.

There are many things that I like about being a PSU student. One in particular is location; the school is so seamlessly a part of downtown Portland. I also like the diversity. In my first two years of community college I found myself to be the only student of color in most of my classes. Now that is no longer the case. I also like being an ambassador because of our ability to reach out to the community, interact with people, and share our passion for engineering. As far as advice goes, I would encourage someone that is starting out in MCECS to keep their head up. There will be moments when you will doubt yourself and start to wonder if you are right for this—just keep on keepin’ on.
