"Using Tiny Pieces of Gold to Visualize STEM cells that Repair Vision Loss"

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the 6th leading cause of blindness, yet there are no effective treatments for the disease. It is estimated that between 2010 and 2050, the number of individuals with AMD will more than double from 2.1 million to 5.4 million. Researchers at Oregon Health and Science University and elsewhere are investigating whether stem cells could be used to treat AMD. Clinical trials have shown that stem cell therapies rescue rod and cone photoreceptors, improve electrophysiological responses, and repair vision loss. Developing these therapies, however, has proven challenging as methods for tracking cell survival and migration are time consuming and expensive. Nanotechnologies developed by Dr. Mackiewicz and her research group help medical researchers overcome those challenges, enabling them to track the distribution, survival, migration, location, and integration of transplanted stem cells. In this talk, Dr. Mackiewicz will discuss the nanotechnologies she develops in the lab and how medical researchers are using them in efforts to develop novel therapies to treat AMD. Read the technical abstract.

The Research Rounds Speaker Series provides faculty, students, staff, and the public the opportunity to learn more about PSU research, scholarship, and engagement and the impact of these activities on our local, regional, national, and global communities.
