Virginia Butler, Anthropology faculty, has received a $62,000 award from the National Marine Fisheries Service for the project "Using Archaeological Fish Remains to Determine Salmonid Species and Residence Pattern (Marine vs. Freshwater) of Pre-Development Fish in Upper Klamath Basin." This project will fund anthropology masters thesis research by Alex Stevenson, and ancient DNA and geochemistry analysis of fish remains from archaeological sites dating between 8000 and 100 years ago. Knowledge of the species occupying the basin prior to hydro-development, obtained from archaeological bone records, will assist resource managers working on salmon recovery efforts.
