A Celebration of Life will be held at Portland State University’s Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom for late Portland Commissioner Nick Fish on Feb. 16 at 3 p.m.

The event is open to the public but seating is limited. It will be livestreamed at the student union and online at

Former Gov. Barbara Roberts will speak at the memorial, which will highlight the commissioner’s years of work with our campus. PSU mourns with Commissioner Fish’s family and his wife, Patricia Schechter, interim director of PSU’s Conflict Resolution Program and a professor of history.

“We’re grateful to Portland State University, especially the Office of the President, for graciously hosting,” Schechter said. “One gathering alone cannot capture all that Portland meant to Nick or that Nick meant to Portland. We hope that this first public celebration will begin to release our grief toward healing as well as inspire service to the community in Nick’s memory, and we look forward to other gatherings.”

The Portland State Foundation has established a Nick Fish Memorial Fund for Leadership that will support students in the Hatfield School of Government. To support the fund, donate through the Foundation website or through the mail:
