The Human behind PSU’s Award Winning Social Media Platforms

Portland State University knows talent when we see it. So when Christian Aniciete graduated from Portland State with his Bachelor's degree in marketing and advertising in 2010 and gave the commencement address to PSU’s class of 2010, he was offered a job at PSU’s Office of University Communications.  Then, he was working part time with Apple as a student, and had applied to the Apple leadership program, been accepted, but could not turn down the communications position from PSU.

Christian immigrated to the United States from the Philippines when he was just 10 years old, where he and his brother were reunited with their mother in Hillsboro, OR for better opportunities. His PSU pride was instilled early, by his step dad who is a PSU engineering alumnus. His step brother Danny, and brother Jeffrey also attended PSU while Christian was in high school, inspiring him to apply for the Diversity Scholarship. "This is a great place to learn, and create your path."

He attended PSU with his then high school sweetheart Shannon. As alumni they got married, and continue to share the PSU campus while she works on her Master’s on Counseling in the Graduate School of Education. Christian is also considering a second degree from PSU, with lots of self-reflection about a possible MBA.

His recent acceptance of the CASE Rising Star Award (link:, which honors district members whose early success, bodes well for future leadership and achievement of the University. Christian says his marketing position is about strategy, events, communications, leadership and wearing multiple hats. “My job is about using social media tools to tell the story of my alma mater and I couldn’t be more lucky because PSU has a big, bold and amazing story to tell.” Genuinely and authentically believing the story is where his inspiration comes from, he encourages people to create their own path. Christian's advice to students is, "maximize the opportunities this this great campus and city have to offer.”

Christian has not stopped learning, and is student currently in the digital marketing program certification. When asked about his CASE recognition, he says, "As a young professional, getting recognized is very humbling. It’s a great reminder that hard work pays off and only motivates me to never settle for anything less .”  In addition to his work in social media marketing, Christian serves as a mentor to students in PSU Kaibigan, the Filipino American Student Association at PSU. He is also the co-chair of PSU’s Diversity Action Council, a President-appointed committee that guides PSU programs, policies and decision making so that the university works in conjunction with its diverse constituents. Under his leadership, Christian is instituting the first ever cultural competency training series on campus.
