Int'l Faculty-Led Program Info Session: Similarly Different: Graphic Designers in London
Thursday, January 25, 2018 - 1:00pm

England has long been a cultural center of Europe and the world. It’s been home to some of the most beloved and timeless typographers and designers like John Baskerville, Edward Johnston, Neville Brody, Peter Saville, Vaughn Oliver and many more. It’s a bustling center of innovators, and is truly a marvel for graphic designers to explore.

Our group will spend 19 days in London visiting art and design museums, top design studios, doing hands-on workshops, and soaking up the diverse energy and culture of the city. During this time, students will have the chance to see British approaches to design—differences that are subtle, but noticeable nonetheless. Even a trip to the grocery store will illuminate just how differently UK designers market to their customers compared with American designers.

A typical day will start with a short meet-up in the dormitory, for students to update their travel journals/blogs—and then off we go in to the city! Lunches will be at restaurants/take-away joints near our activities. Evenings will be open for the students to explore (dinner will be their responsibility). A day trip out of the city will offer a nice respite from the busy capital.

In addition to the city activities, students will participate in a creative exchange with British and international students from London College of Communication. Students will meet in studios at the university to participate in workshops on letterpress, Risography, and screenprinting. They will then be given a brief and studio time to complete the brief. The work created will then be shown in a pop-up exhibition at London College of Communication.

The program starts and ends with group dinners—one will be traditional British food at a top notch pub, and the other tasty Indian food—England’s second national cuisine.

This trip creates a community among the travelers, as well as the British/international students they collaborate with. Beyond the technical knowledge gained, and cultural touchstones experienced—students will come away with friends who love and live for design, and perhaps some who live across the world.
